What colour are ebook reader screens?

A lot of people have mentioned to me that they expected ebook reader screens to be white with black writing, then were disappointed when they saw a real one and found that the background is grey.

Well I’m afraid it’s one of the features of eink technology that the background can never be pure white. The screen is made up of millions of little round particles that are white on one side, black on the other, and they show either black side up or white side up. But then the white side is up, the black is faintly visible through the particle, making for a pale grey effect. Most of the pictures you see on the web do actually reflect this.
It also depends a lot on the lighting as to how white the screen actually appears.
But the main thing is that an ebook screen is very readable indeed, and the lack of stark black/white contrast makes it that much easier on the eye. This means that you can read fo hour after hour with no strain, even in poor light.
So yes, the screen is pale grey rather than white, but look on this as an advantage. After you start using your ebook reader, you’ll not even notice what colour the screen is. You won’t even notice that you’re using an ebook reader. The experience is so pleasurable that you’ll just take reading on your ebook reader as the great delight that it is.
